For consumers, retailers, restaurants and service providers alike, Covid-19 has ushered in a new reality; cash is out and contactless methods of payment is quickly gaining ground as the preferred platform.
With cash viewed as a possible method of spreading the virus through touch contact, consumers are relying more on plastics, either credit or debt cards as their go-to payment choice. But even the touch screens and buttons on payment terminals emit mental warning signals, so mobile wallets and contactless systems are on the rise and taking center stage.
As restaurants and other retailers expand their services for curbside pickup or home deliveries, contactless mobile transaction devices allow for easy payments without the need for physical contact or pin entry.
When the Future Comes Early
Contactless payments were already gaining ground in the US, but Covid-19 created an overnight demand. Offering flexibility and apps that can be downloaded to an iPhone or Android device, the system can accept payments from cards or mobile wallets, and can even record cash and check payments, sending receipts via text or email directly to the customer. It’s estimated that two thirds of small-to-medium-sized businesses in the US will offer contactless card and mobile wallet payment options by the end of 2020.
